Bloomberg Businessweek expresses 'regret' over cover illustration

(Bloomberg Businessweek)

Bloomberg Businessweek is taking a beating from critics who say the magazine's recent cover?featuring a cartoon illustration of what appears to be a black family rolling in cash from a housing rebound?is racist.

"Our cover illustration got strong reactions, which we regret," Josh Tyrangiel, Bloomberg Businessweek's editor in chief, said in a statement to Yahoo News. "If we had to do it over again, we'd do it differently."

The Feb. 25 cover depicts the cash-grabbing family members as stereotypical caricatures inside a two-story pink home above the headline "The Great American Housing Rebound."

"Flips. No-look bids. 300 percent returns," the subhead reads. "What could possibly go wrong?"

"The claim that minorities are creating a housing bubble through flipping, no-look bids, and 300% returns is simply not reality," Jacob Gaffney wrote on HousingWire.com. "Flipping is a form of fraud and not a typical transaction. No-look bids are not exclusive to Hispanic and African-American investors. No one is making a 300% return."

"Businessweek Warns That Minorities May Be Buying Houses Again," Matthew Yglesias wrote on Slate.com.

"It?s hard to imagine how this one made it through the editorial process," Ryan Chittum wrote on the Columbia Journalism Review.

Andres Guzman, a Peru-born, Minneapolis-based artist, was commissioned by Bloomberg Businessweek for the illustration. "I was asked to make an excited family with large quantities of money," Guzman wrote on his Tumblr page before the controversy erupted. "I slipped in my lovely cat, Boo, which was my favorite part. Too bad I wasn?t asked to draw large quantities of cats. Drawing dollars was a drag."

Bloomberg Businessweek has become known for its provocative covers. Tyrangiel was named Advertising Age's 2012 Editor of the Year because of his willingness?along with creative director Richard Turley?to push the envelope.

Last year, the magazine published a cover featuring two commercial jets having plane sex (under the headline "Let's Get It On") to illustrate the Continental-United merger. It also published a cover featuring Mitt Romney?then in the heat of the Republican primary?with the cover art from Bruce Springsteen's 1984 album "Born in the U.S.A." displayed in front of the former Massachussetts governor's backside, supporting the cover line: "SCORNED IN THE USA."

"I'm glad that our covers have captured a lot of attention and that some people call them controversial, but that's really only because the stories themselves are controversial," Tyrangiel had told Ad Age. "Part of it is that we have a group of people here who are not afraid to handle really hot subjects."

Astronomers clock supermassive black hole's spin for first time

How fast does a supermassive black hole spin? For the first time, scientists have made a reliable measurement of these behemoths, thought to be at the center of most, if not all, galaxies.

By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / February 27, 2013

A combined observation of the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy NGC 1365 by two orbiting observatories (ESA's XMM-Newton and NASA's NuSTAR) provided the best view ever of the black hole. This allowed scientists to test the effects of Einstein's theory of general relativity, and to measure the spin of the black hole.

The enormous black hole at the center of the spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is spinning about 84 percent as fast as?Einstein's general theory of relativity?allows it to, researchers determined. The find demonstrates that at least some supermassive black holes are rotating rapidly ? a claim previous studies had hinted at but failed to confirm.

"It's the first time that we can really say that?black holes?are spinning," study co-author Fiona Harrison, of Caltech in Pasadena, told SPACE.com. "The promise that this holds for being able to understand how black holes grow is, I think, the major implication."

Staring at a black hole in X-ray light

Supermassive black holes are almost incomprehensibly huge, with some containing 10 billion or more times the mass of our sun. Scientists think one lurks at the heart of most, if not all, galaxies. [Gallery: Black Holes of the Universe]

NGC 1365, located about 56 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Fornax, does indeed harbor a gigantic black hole ? one as massive as several million suns.?And this behemoth is blasting out enormous quantities of energy as it gobbles up gas and other nearby matter, making it an intriguing target for astronomers.

In the new study, researchers analyzed observations two X-ray space telescopes ? the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton observatory and NASA's?Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array?(NuSTAR) ? made of NGC 1365 in July 2012.

By zeroing in on high-energy light emitted by iron atoms, the?telescopes?were able to trace the motion of the flat, rotating accretion disk that circles NGC 1365's black hole and funnels gas and dust into its greedy maw.

Astronomers found that the emissions are strongly distorted, suggesting that the inner edge of the accretion disk may be quite close to the black hole ? close enough for gravitational effects to wreak havoc with the X-rays streaming from the disk. This in turn implies a rapidly rotating black hole, since general relativity states that the faster a black hole is spinning, the closer its disk can come to it, Harrison said.

But that's just one interpretation. Another holds that such distortion, which has been observed in accretion disk emissions before, could be caused by clouds of gas that hang between a supermassive black hole and the telescopes observing it. [The Strangest Black Holes in the Universe]

"This has been a big controversy ? which of the two is going on?" Harrison said.

Pinning down a black hole's spin

The $165 million?NuSTAR telescope, which just launched in June 2012, finally cracked the case.

Using NuSTAR's super-sensitive measurements of high-energy X-rays, the astronomers calculated that the purported gas clouds would have to be incredibly thick to produce the observed distortion levels ? so thick as to make the whole idea untenable, at least in the case of NGC 1365's black hole.

"To shine through these thick clouds, the black hole would have to be so bright it would basically blow itself apart," said Harrison, who's principal investigator for the NuSTAR mission. "So what has to be happening is, what we're seeing is these relativistic distortions. And that means that the disk is coming close to the black hole, which means the black hole must be spinning rapidly."

The research team, led by Guido Risaliti of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics' Arcetri Observatory, calculated this rotation rate to be 84 percent of that allowed by general relativity.

It's tough to comprehend this figure, since it doesn't translate well into miles per hour.?But it's safe to say that the black hole is spinning incredibly fast.

"The analogy of an actual velocity is not quite right," Harrison said. "But what you can say is that spinning black holes twist space-time around them. And if you were standing near the black hole, basically your space-time would be twisted, or dragged, around such that you would have to rotate once every four minutes just to be standing still."

The new study was published online today (Feb. 27) in the journal Nature.

Learning about black hole growth

Astronomers think?supermassive black holes?acquire most of their spin as they grow, rather than being born with it. So studying their rotation rates can yield insights into how these monsters have evolved over time.

The superfast spin of NGC 1365's black hole, for example, implies that it did not grow via numerous small black-hole mergers, Harrison said, since the odds are very low that many such chaotic events would spin it up in the same direction.

Rather, it's more likely that NGC 1365's central black hole acquired its spin from one major merger, or simply by gobbling material from an accretion disk that has remained stable over the long haul.

The new study represents a first step toward a better understanding of the nature and evolution of supermassive black holes, Harrison said.

"We will make more measurements like this," she said. "Eventually what you'd like to do is have a bigger telescope that can actually measure more distant black holes so we can, using the statistics of the sample, understand how they grow over cosmic time."

FDA halts Amgen study after teen patient death

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal health regulators have halted Amgen's studies of its drug Sensipar after the death of a 14-year-old patient in a company trial.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it is still gathering information about the death, but has shut down all studies of the drug in children.

Sensipar is approved in adults to treat over-activity of the parathyroid gland, which can lead to brittle bones, kidney stones and abdominal pain. It has been used since 2004 to treat symptoms of chronic kidney disease and parathyroid cancer.

Amgen Inc. had been studying the drug to see whether it works in children.

The Thousand Oaks, Calif.-based company said in a statement that it "is working as rapidly as possible to understand the circumstances of what happened."

The FDA said on its website that it is unclear whether Amgen's drug had a role in the patient's death, but it is reminding doctors to prescribe it carefully.

The drug is known to lower calcium levels, sometimes to a dangerous extent.

The agency says doctors should monitor patients' calcium levels monthly to make sure they don't fall to dangerous levels. Signs of a calcium deficiency include muscle cramping, convulsions and burning or prickling sensations.

The most common side effects of the drug in adults include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Amgen reported annual sales of $800 million for Sensipar in 2011, its most recent full-year financial report.

Company shares fell 7 cents to $89.48 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

Anonymous Hack Of Bank Of America - Business Insider

Anonymous hackers have released 14 gigabytes of information allegedly related to Bank of America and a web intelligence firm it hired to spy on hackers and social activists last year.

Emails detail how employees of TEKSystems actively watched hacker forums and social media sites for any remotely relevant pieces of "intelligence."

The leak includes a list of more than 10,000 words, phrases, and references ? everything from "jihad" to "keg stand" to "I Wish That I Had Duck Feet" ? that was used to match for entries on forums like anonops and sites including Twitter (including Tweetdeck),?pastebin, Facebook,?and various blogs.

A press release from Par:AnoIA (aka Anonymous Intelligence Agency) states that the data "clearly shows that the research was sloppy, random and valueless."

But the emails include "Daily Cyber Threat Highlights" that list events and stories from all over the world.

And the data dump adds a new element to what is known about public and private entities surveilling protestors of Occupy Wall Street.

We knew that web intelligence firm Ntrepid mapped online relationships between anarchists and the leaders of Occupy. These documents reveal that TEKSystems assembled "intelligence" reports on both Occupy and hackers for (at least) the first 11 months of 2012.

Anonymous insists it was not a hack:

"[T]he data was not acquired by a hack but because it was stored on a misconfigured server and basically open for grabs. Even more alarming, the data was retrieved from an Israeli server in Tel Aviv."

"As a bonus," the hackers released 4.8 gigabytes of data containing the salary information top executives around the world, including Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Pierce lifts road-weary Celtics over Jazz in OT

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The Boston Celtics weren't too tired after playing five games in seven days back and forth across time zones.

They had enough left to play overtime to close out a long Western road trip, beating the Utah Jazz 110-107 on Monday night.

Thirty-five-year-old Paul Pierce led Boston with 26 points, including seven straight in the extra session.

"It was huge," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Whatever that was, it was the best win of the year for me. . To go into overtime and still have enough to win."

It wasn't just the ageless Pierce. Kevin Garnett, three months shy of his 37th birthday, stood strong at the end, refusing to let Rivers sub him out by insisting, "I am good."

Rivers didn't believe that, "but I kept him in and he was terrific."

Garnett had four points in overtime on 2-of-2 shooting, with three rebounds. He finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, a blocked shot and steal.

The Celtics also got a big game from Avery Bradley, who scored a season-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Pierce had a chance to win it in regulation, but his 19-footer at the buzzer rimmed out.

Alec Burks' reverse layup pulled Utah to 108-105 with 37 seconds left in overtime. Garnett's banked 3-pointer with 13 seconds left came after the shot clock expired, giving the Jazz another chance.

Paul Millsap was fouled before he could get off a 3, but made two free throws with 4.2 seconds remaining.

Courtney Lee added two free throws at the other end with 1.2 seconds left to bump Boston's lead back to three, and Randy Foye's 26-footer at the buzzer missed everything.

It was another one the Jazz let get away, though Monday's game had huge swings both ways from start to finish.

Overall, the game had 13 lead changes and was tied 17 times.

"We were in position," said Jazz forward Marvin Williams. "We fought back in the fourth quarter to force overtime but Boston just made big plays down the stretch."

Gordon Hayward led Utah with 26 points, Millsap had 16 and Al Jefferson finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Celtics (30-27) were playing their fifth game in seven days, but didn't seem to care down the stretch.

The Jazz (31-26) led 101-99 in overtime on DeMarre Carroll's 21-footer, but Pierce countered with a 3-pointer, then followed with a pull-up jumper over Carroll and a 15-footer to give the Celtics a 106-101 edge with 1:12 left.

Jefferson hit a 15-footer with 1:05 left to get Utah within 106-103, but Garnett's jumper helped seal it.

"We knew this was probably going to be the toughest game for us physically and mentally," Pierce said. "Talking about a long road trip, coming in to one of the toughest places to play. We felt we could salvage this trip with a win here. So guys did a good job of just being mentally tough, digging in and doing what we had to do to get the win."

The Celtics, who went 2-3 on the trip, also were smart down the stretch, fouling with fouls to give and finding a wide-open Lee on the inbounds pass when the Jazz needed a late steal in overtime. His free throws provided the final margin.

The Jazz trailed by eight entering the fourth but opened on a 13-2 run.

Jefferson's 10-foot turnaround jumper over Brandon Bass tied it at 93 with 2:46 left in regulation.

Pierce hit an 18-footer with Carroll diving at him for a 97-95 Boston lead with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, only to see Burks tie it with a tough layup with 19 seconds left.

"We wanted to win in regulation," Pierce said. "It would have felt better just to get a stop when we needed it. That's what we need to get better at. We didn't do it in Portland. We didn't do it tonight. That's what we need to start focusing on. When we get the lead and we need crucial stops, we have to figure out how to get them."

The game took a 16-point swing in the third, as Boston trailed 58-50 only to counter with a 20-4 run and lead 80-72 entering the fourth.

Pierce ignited the run with a 3-pointer, Bradley hit two more 3s and Lee added a dunk after a steal and another 3-pointer. Pierce capped the run with a jumper over Hayward for a 70-62 Boston lead.

The Celtics hit 6 of 13 3-pointers in the 32-point third quarter, while Utah made just 5 of 16 from the field.

It was the same story as Saturday, when the Jazz fought back early only to see the Los Angeles Clippers go on a 23-4 run and douse any hopes.

A Jazz team that had won three straight and seven of 10 has now dropped two in a row.

While Hayward showed he is recovered from a right shoulder injury despite missing a pair of shots in overtime, the Jazz still need point guard Mo Williams back from a thumb injury.

Monday, Earl Watson started over Jamaal Tinsley, but Burks ended up playing the position during Utah's big second-quarter run.

Pierce said Boston reverted to various defenses to slow the Jazz.

"We did a lot of zone, did a lot of man and tried to force turnovers," Pierce said. "That's what we have to do. A lot of times we had to go to small because they had plenty of size and they rebound well. We just junked up the game a little bit by changing our defense."

It may have been junk, but it was a win nonetheless.

"We have champions," said guard Jason Terry, who made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and two assists off the bench for Boston.

"When you have champions that have been through so many tough games as we have, then you know you're in good hands. For us, we hang our hat on executing down the stretch."

NOTES; Jazz F Derrick Favors picked up his third foul with 9:06 left in the second quarter. . Jazz G Foye needed four 3-pointers to tie Mehmet Okur (129, 2006-07) for the franchise single-season record. Foye went 0-5 Saturday but hit his first Monday and finished 2 of 6. . Bradley started 5 of 5 and had 10 points in six minutes for Boston, while Millsap started 4 of 4 for Utah. . The Jazz led 53-48 at halftime.

Green Blog: A Report Card for Global Food Giants

The antipoverty group Oxfam has come up with a scorecard that evaluates the impact that the supply chains of behemoth food companies have on water consumption, labor and wages, greenhouse gas emissions and nutrition.

The goal of the scorecard, called ?Behind the Brands,? is to motivate consumers to pressure companies like Nestl?, Kellogg and Mars to improve their policies on land and water use and the treatment of small farmers, among other things, and to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

?Customer choice helps these companies build brand loyalty and value, which helps them build the bottom line,? said Raymond C. Offenheiser, president of Oxfam America. ?These supply chains are what connects the consumer to the farmer in the field, and there is an increasing interest in that.?

Apparel and mining companies have moved to increase the transparency of their supply chains, improving their practices in the process, Mr. Offenheiser said. But food companies are notably opaque when it comes to disclosing how they obtain the ingredients for the food they sell.

In fact, they sometimes openly fight such disclosure, spending tens of millions of dollars recently, for instance, to avoid disclosing the use of genetically engineered ingredients on food packaging. Some have also resisted identifying the countries where their ingredients originate.

But consumers today have more information about the food they eat than ever, and the impact of that knowledge is increasingly clear. The reaction against organic and natural food brands whose corporate parents fought a California ballot initiative requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods persists, even though it was defeated in November. And a 15-year-old recently waged a successful campaign to get brominated vegetable oil, a controversial food additive, removed from Gatorade.

?I think these companies understand that engaging stakeholders, not just shareholders, is a fact of life going forward,? Mr. Offenheiser said. ?Growing market share and customer loyalty as a result of that engagement has a direct impact on the bottom line.?

He emphasized that Oxfam did not wish to dredge up old scandals ? although the report accompanying the new scorecard mentions several ? but rather to create what he called ?a race to the top.?

Two giant European food companies, Nestl? and Unilever, scored highest on the initial scorecard, followed by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. But no companies received Oxfam?s highest ratings across the board. Nestl?, which has worked to reduce the use of water in its processes, was awarded a 7 out of 10 in the water and transparency categories of the scorecard. Unilever received the same score for its treatment of small farmers.

Conversely, 7 of the 10 companies received the lowest score possible for their use of land. Scores for the treatment of women working in agriculture were generally low as well. Seven of the companies received a grade of ?extremely poor? or ?failing? for the impact of their businesses on climate change.

Oscars Prediction Dartboard: Who Was Wrong-est?

The Oscars may be less consequential than presidential elections, but it?s another opportunity to gamble for predictive bragging rights. Some, such as the Huffington Post?s David Rothschild, have adopted a data-driven, Nate Silver-esque approach, while others simply seem to combine their personal preferences with nebulous theories of the film industry. Now that the Oscars are over, who made all the wrong calls, and who should be condemned for witchcraft?

In the dartboard above, each dart represents the percentage of correct Oscar calls a commentator made out of 11 categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Cinematography. London hospital builds lullaby factory

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in central London, presented architecture practices with a tough brief: how to pretty up a temporary design law. As the winning practice, Studio Weave explains, "The multi-phased redevelopment of Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London's Bloomsbury area, means that the recently completed Morgan Stanley Clinical Building and the 1930s Southwood Building currently sit very close together. The latter is due to be demolished in 15 years, but in the intervening period large windows in the west elevation of the MSCB look directly onto a pipe-ridden brickwork facade, with the gap between the two less than one metre in places."

Rather than smooth away the rough industrial edges, Studio Weave capitalised on the multitude of pipes and vents, re-imagining the space as a "Lullaby Factory", manufacturing and releasing gentle, beautiful lullabies to create a calming and uplifting environment for the young patients to recover in."

?

The Lullaby Factory by Studio Weave

The practice then conjured up a plethora of gramophone-style speaker horns, pipes, taps and gauges, incorporating pieces reclaimed from the hospital's old boiler house, which was being decommissioned at the time.

While the lullabies produced by this factory can't be heard blaring around the courtyard, Studio Weave have enabled patients and visitors to hear a specially commissioned lullaby by composer and sound artist Jessica Curry, either by tuning into the hospital's radio frequency, or by putting their ear to a few listening pipes.

?

The Lullaby Factory by Studio Weave

Sound installations and children-friendly art aren't the easiest of things to pull off, let alone in a hospital setting, so we applaud Studio Weave's work, which strikes us as the kind of thing Roald Dahl and W Heath Robinson might have come up with, had they accepted the brief. For more intriguing examples of recent architectural solutions, take a look at our Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture.?And for a child friendly introduction to the wonders of art check out The Art Book for Children.?

>>> we begin with the search for suspects in connection with a deadly shooting on the las vegas strip . new information about the victims. we have more from los angeles . good morning.

>> reporter: erica, good morning. the driver of the maserati , kenny clutch cherry, was an aspiring rapper. while he had minor run-ins with the law several years ago, so far nothing explains why he would have been targeted for murder. authorities are hoping ever-present surveillance cameras in sin city provide the break they need. today investigators are scouring recordings from surveillance cameras . both inside and around the aria hotel.

>> there is quite a bit of video available that we are at this point in time retrieving.

>> reporter: hoping they hold the clues that could provide the break they need in thursday's horrific shooting. the crime scene has been cleared. and the vegas strip is back open for business. still, authorities don't seem any closer to determining what led to the shooting. the gunman still on the loose. police say it began with an argument at the valet stand at the aria. the conflict continued on the vegas strip , witnesses said, when someone in a black range rover fired several shots at a gray maserati . the maserati spun out of control, hitting several cars, including a taxi that exploded. three people were killed. the taxi driver identified overnight as michael bolden, his passenger, sandra sutton wasmond, and the driver of the maserati identified as kenneth clutch cherry.

>> reporter: the father of three was an aspiring rapper who rapped about his beloved sports car in a recent music video .

>> you never want it leave your children leave before you leave. i didn't have him long enough. so i have to live with that.

>> reporter: news of the shooting and accident stunned tourists.

>> terrifying really. i mean, we're staying at caesar's. it definitely could have been us.

>> we're from a small town in missouri. and, you know, things like that don't happen. i'm like, honey, that happened right out the window. crazy.

>> reporter: this manhunt spans four states. authorities say they're looking for a black range rover with paper plates. the vehicle they say may contain the gunman who turned the vegas strip into a scene of tragedy. erica?

Q&A-Tennis-Federer's heart is in South Africa

GOVHU, South Africa (Reuters) - Roger Federer was back in South Africa for the first time in eight years and it was not long before he was surrounded by a swarm of three-year-old toddlers tugging at his shirt and hankering to play a game of tennis.

Unlike many of the fans the 17-times grand slam champion usually encounters, these children hold a special place in the Swiss champion's heart as his charitable foundation is helping to educate them.

Federer showed the children how to play tennis, joined them in a game of hopscotch and read out stories to a captive audience before sitting down with Reuters to chat about the pressures faced by top athletes, being in his South African mother's homeland, and what he hopes to achieve during the 10th anniversary of the Roger Federer Foundation.

REUTERS: Your trip here has coincided with the bail hearing of paralympian Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius's story has put a particular spotlight on sporting heroes. Do you think there's a lot of pressure put on professional athletes?

FEDERER: Everybody handles it (pressure and stress) differently. My success came gradually, which was helpful, even though I was always considered a great talent, someone who could become world number one. So it wasn't a huge surprise that I made it to world number one and won Wimbledon, but for me it was.

To handle that stardom, the red carpets, the photo shoots, people all of a sudden recognizing you and following you in everyday life, it's a bit weird. It's strange and it can have funny effects on you in terms of do you like it or don't you like it. Some people run away from it, some people embrace it, I found a good middle ground.

It's tricky, especially (because) people love fairytale stories; take you down, put you back up, put you down. And obviously the more famous you become, the more great everything seems when things goes well, and the worse they seem when things don't go so well.

I realized that when I was world number one, I would play an average match and people would say ?you played so well, it's unbelievable'. And when I would play incredibly they would say ?oh my god, we've never seen this tennis before in my life'. So it's always an exaggeration, the whole thing, and that's what we live in, unfortunately.

REUTERS: So are we paying undue attention to Pistorius because of who he is?

FEDERER: This is now a particular story, it's very difficult. You can't compare this one to any other....

REUTERS: How important is it to take time out?

FEDERER: For me vacation and family time is as important as training. So I try to take to take at least 10 days if not two weeks of holiday. After the Australian (Open in January) I took two weeks of vacation, all I did was spend time with my family.

I couldn't handle this daily stress of people recognizing me, signing autographs, doing press, playing matches, the pressure, people always in my face.

I need to get away from it all. So that when I do come back to the game, I'm hungry, and I'm in the mood to sign autographs, I'm in the mood to do interviews. Not that it becomes a drain and it becomes a burden, because when it's that, the fun goes away then you stop, it's just as simple as that.

REUTERS: It's been a decade since you set up the Roger Federer Foundation which funds pre-school and primary education in Africa and Switzerland. What are you doing to mark the anniversary?

FEDERER: We were thinking of doing different things. Most important was that I definitely do the trip this year, that has been my number one priority. I went to Ethiopia a few years ago but I really wanted to come back to South Africa.

My heart is in South Africa, through my mum. My mum being from here, me spending a lot of time here as well, I feel most connected to this part of the world.

Obviously I would like to see other ones (projects in the five other African countries) as well, but coming here, being able to do something in South Africa and also visiting my family was important.

The 10 years are important to us. I still feel we're in the beginning of everything. Ten years sounds like a long time but it's changed a lot in terms of the kids we're able to reach and the money we're able to put out there to help.

In this regard I was thinking of doing another 'Match for Africa' again which I did two or three years ago with (Rafa)Nadal when I was able to raise up to $3 million. I don't know if this year will be the year to do it but I hope to.

REUTERS: Is it important for people in your kind of position to 'give back'?

FEDERER: Sometimes it's not always about the money. If people were willing to give time, to talk, to inspire, to help; because at the end of the day it comes down to the people who help the kids get smarter and get better at the end of the day.

Of course you need money to be able to do that sometimes, not everywhere in the world, but here particularly you do, its clear, its visible.

REUTERS: Is it important to do it?

FEDERER: I think you have to do what you feel is right to do. I don't think there's a certain obligation, but it would be a missed opportunity if you didn't because, let's not forget how incredibly lucky... I can only speak for myself; how incredibly lucky I feel that I made my hobby my job and my dream at the end of the day.

Sometimes with little effort I can raise so much awareness or raise so much money in one event, that other people would take a long long time to raise - I feel I would be selfish if I were to not share that with other people.

REUTERS: Your twin daughters are almost four years old now. Does having a family make you better or slow you down?

FEDERER: I thought it would maybe slow me down a bit just because everybody says so. I'm happy that again I was able to prove that its possible to have a family and play well. Not only do I have a family but I have twin girls, so it was super intense in the first years, it's still very intense now. But I made it work. I have an incredible wife who is so supportive and is willing to travel.

At (the) Rotterdam (tournament last week) I was by myself, and I didn't feel the same. Maybe that's one of the reasons I didn't play well, who knows? I miss them much.

I'm happy that I'm able to combine both at the same time. Nine, 10 years ago I never thought of me being a dad, playing tennis, winning the big titles.

In the dream or vision, you always see yourself with the trophy, but you never see yourself with the trophy looking at your kids like what happened at Wimbledon last year. I'm happy I had the opportunity to live through that, those memories will be with me for a lifetime.

NB: The Roger Federer Foundation supports 40 pre-schools in Limpopo province and spends over $3 million a year on educational projects in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia and Federer's home country Switzerland.

Over 50,000 children benefited from the foundation's efforts in 2012 to improve quality education in pre-schools and primary schools.

Sony NEX-3N: The Awesomest Beginner Mirrorless Camera Is Now Smaller and Lighter

We're big fans of Sony's line of mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras. Sony Europe just announced NEX-3N, the latest update to the starter NEX camera. We loved last year's NEX-F3, and, really, we should be elated that Sony has made it considerably smaller and lighter to make it more appealing to entry-level customers. Alas, we've got mixed feelings. More »

What's behind Mexico's silence on immigration debate?

Mexico has a lot at stake, but its government says it does?not want to interfere in the domestic decisions of the US.

By Lauren Villagran,?Correspondent / January 31, 2013

The days when a Mexican president would raise the battle cry for US immigration reform are long past.

Since a bipartisan group of US senators unveiled their proposal this week to resolve the status of millions of undocumented workers in the United States, and President Obama outlined a set of principles for reform, the Mexican government has stayed quietly out of the fray ??sparking questions here about what, if any, role?Mexico?should play.

Mexico has more at stake than many other nations whose people leave for US shores: Fully 10 percent of the Mexican population resides in the US. Sixty percent of the 11.1 million unauthorized immigrants living and working in the US are Mexican, according to Pew Hispanic Center.

?The current Mexican government of Enrique Pe?a Nieto has been very careful to say that they are not going to interfere in the domestic decisions of the US,? says Jesus Velasco, a political science professor at Tarleton State University in Texas. ?It?s silly. The American political system permits that the interests of foreign countries should be represented here.?

Mr. Velasco cited the effective lobbying by the Mexican government on NAFTA in the 1990s. But immigration has been a stickier issue.

Immigration was once the central theme of the bilateral relationship. A decade ago, former Mexican President Vicente Fox met with President George W. Bush five times in nine months to discuss the issue and in an address to Congress boldly requested action before the end of the year. That was in 2001, just days before the Sept. 11 attacks. The agenda quickly fell apart.

Former President Felipe Calder?n wiped immigration off the slate in 2006 and retrained the focus of the US-Mexico relationship on security. Today, six years later, Mr. Pe?a Nieto appears poised to do the same.

So far the only public comment on the proposals has come from the Mexican ministry of foreign affairs, which said in a brief statement that it ?recognizes the commitment demonstrated by an ever larger number of parties? on the issue but noted that reform is an ?internal matter? for the US federal government.

Work to do at home

Mexico?s real work today ??given that net emigration from Mexico to the US fell to zero in the past year ??lies not in promoting reform in the US but in ensuring economic opportunity for people here, says Antonio de la Cuesta, a senior political analyst with Mexico City-based think tank CIDAC.

?The focus has been wrong,? he says. ?Mexico waits for the US to do everything. It?s about both countries [taking action].?

Roughly half of Mexicans live below the poverty line, according to the United Nations. Last year, Mexico?s social development agency reported the number of Mexicans living in extreme poverty at 13 million.

Mexican immigration to the US may have slowed because of the recession in the US and increased enforcement at the border, but the conditions that have historically driven people north haven?t yet changed. For many Mexicans, a daily wage here amounts to less than the hourly wage in the US.

There are consequences for Mexico, too, in whatever the US decides, says Mr. De la Cuesta. For example, he asks, would Mexicans living in the US bring additional family members north, and stop sending the remittances that rank among the country?s top three income sources?

Mexico needs a ?complementary? proposal, he says: solutions for poverty.

?Mexico has a lot to say in this respect,? he says, ?and no reason to interfere.?

Bird invasion brings real-life horror to Kentucky city

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - Millions of birds have descended on a small Kentucky city this winter, fouling the landscape, scaring pets and raising the risk for disease in a real-life version of Alfred Hitchcock's horror film, "The Birds."

The blackbirds and European starlings blacken the sky of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, before roosting at dusk, turn the landscape white with bird poop, and the disease they carry can kill a dog and sicken humans.

"I have seen them come in, and there are enough that if the sun is just right, they'll cloud your vision of the sun," said Hopkinsville-Christian County historian William Turner. "I estimate there are millions of them."

David Chiles, president of the Little River Audubon Society, said the fact that migratory flocks are roosting in the city rather than flying further south is tied to climate warming.

"The weather, the climate plays a big role," said Chiles, the bird enthusiast who also teaches biology at Hopkinsville High School.

"They somehow establish a roost south of where the ground is frozen solid," he explained. "They are ground feeders, feeding on leftover crops and insects. If the fields are frozen solid, they can't feed."

Although the birds have not turned on humans as in the classic 1963 Hitchcock movie featuring vicious attacks on people in a small northern California town, the city has taken defensive measures.

The south-central Kentucky city of 35,000 people, about an hour north of Nashville, has hired a pest control company to get rid of the interlopers.

Henry Jako, general manager of McGee Pest Control, said crews use air cannons and "bird-bangers" - similar to bottle rocket fireworks aimed into the trees where the birds roost.

The artillery attacks are disturbing some locals as well as the birds.

"It scares my little dog to death," said Christian County Judge-Executive Steve Tribble. "I don't know what it does other than move the birds from one tree to the next."

Jako said that in the worst-affected neighbourhoods, multiple cannons and consecutive blasts are being used to keep the birds moving.

When they fly away, the birds leave behind a huge volume of excrement.

"I've got an apple tree that has almost turned white," Tribble said. "Any vehicle parked outside is covered up. I guess it's good for folks that have car washes."

Historian Turner said that the blackbird invasion this year is the worst he's witnessed since the late 1970s, when Hopkinsville suffered a similar bird blitz.

"We aren't seeing the temperatures go as low as zero like we used to. Now we very often don't even see temperatures in the teens around here," Jako said. "If the birds are comfortable, they are going to stay around," he added.

The birds also pose a serious health hazard because their droppings can carry a fungal disease called histoplasmosis, which can cause lung infections and symptoms similar to pneumonia, according to the Centers for Disease Control website.

"It does become a matter of public health," said Dr. Wade Northington, director of the Murray State University Breathitt Veterinary Center, an animal disease diagnostic facility whose territory covers a 200-mile (322-km) radius from Hopkinsville, including parts of Tennessee, Illinois and Indiana.

"The blackbirds are able to harbour this organism ... so it can be shed in their droppings and it becomes a problem, especially where they tend to roost in extremely high numbers," he said.

It can cause illness in humans, and is particularly dangerous for people with compromised immune systems or respiratory ailments, he said. It can be fatal for canines.

Turner, who suffered histoplasmosis decades ago after excavating family property that once held a chicken coop, describes the disease as debilitating. "I didn't have any energy, and I didn't have much appetite and lost weight," he said.

The droppings contaminate the soil, making it unhealthy for years. It is a worry for dog owners, said Northington.

"It can be very expensive and take months to get it arrested and get an animal cured from it," Northington said. "The disease is very prevalent in our area."

We've definitely had a work weekend!

About a year ago, we changed the carpet in our living room to hardwood.? Well, we got a little busy after that - the whole having a baby and taking care of a newborn thing - and never finished it on the walls and at the doors.
?
We finally got around to it this weekend!
?
?
This is what it looked like before - rough edges and a gap where you could see our foundation.? Gross.
?
?
This is what we did on areas that met the tile. We found the grout that was originally used on our tile, so we just grouted in between!? It was even in a caulk gun so it was really easy to do.? I think it turned out great!
?
?
This is what we did where the hardwood met the carpet (ignore the needs-to-be-cleaned carpet).? This might look easy, but apparently you have to have the gap just-so.? It took Noah and his dad all weekend to put 3 of these in!
?
We're not quite done with every gap, but it looks SO much better!? Next on the list is the quarter round that goes around the walls.? It should be done in the next few weeks.
While they were busy with that, this was my project.? If you've read this blog for awhile, you might remember when we changed the rocks in the flowerbeds to mulch.? The only problem with the mulch is that it CONSTANTLY fell out, and needed a border.
I've loved the way this rock looks as border, so we put it in!? I think it adds SO much to the front of the house.
I feel like we got SO much accomplished this weekend!? There's still a lot to do in the next couple of months, but this is progress.

Engineering 'ghost' objects: Breakthrough in scattering illusion

Feb. 19, 2013 ? A team at the NUS Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering led by Dr Qiu Cheng-Wei has come out with an optical device to "engineer" ghosts.

When someone claims he or she has seen a ghost, the phenomenon may be caused by an optical illusion happening through a wild stroke of nature. But the actual engineering of such a phenomenon is the holy grail of researchers in the field of optical illusions, electromagnetic, and radar detection -- not only because of the thrill and excitement of being able to create a "ghost" but because of the implications it will have in science and applications.

Their research has opened up a completely new avenue for cognitive deception through light-matter behaviour control. This would have wide applications in defence and security. Their findings will also pave the way for the design of new optical and microwave devices such as those for detection and communication. The team will further develop this technique to make larger microwave devices to achieve radar "ghosts" and aircraft camouflage suitable for defence purpose.

Dr Qiu's paper, co-authored with and Dr Han Tiancheng (NUS Dept of Electrical & Computer Engineering), Prof Tie Jun Cui, Dr Wei Xiang Jiang (State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, Department of Radio Engineering, Nanjing), and Prof Shuang Zhang (School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham, UK), entitled "Creation of Ghost Illusions Using Metamaterials in Wave Dynamics" will be published in Advanced Functional Materials in March 2013.

Their paper reported for the first time, the realisation of creating "ghosts" through optic scattering and metamaterials which are artificial materials designed with properties (which do not exist naturally) built-in. Their device is capable of creating more than one virtual "ghost" image from the actual object. The geometric shape, position and equivalent material properties of these "ghost" images can be pre-designed and controlled -- and are also able to appear in distributed places away from the location of the real object.

Doing a David Copperfield

The scientific community has always been enthralled in the creation of an illusion which can potentially transform an actual perception into a pre-controlled perception. So far, scientists experimenting with metamaterials in "ghosting" do not have much success in changing the perception of the real object, and define where the "ghost" should appear. They can only create one "ghost," in the same location (as where the real object is).

But Dr Qiu's device can create multiple "ghosts." It can also make the real object or person "disappear." The researchers can also determine how the "ghosts" look, taking on a different shape or size from the actual object.

Added Dr Qiu, "As our work solves several major issues associated with "ghost" illusion, we believe it will pave way for future applications of advanced optical illusion, camouflage, and cloaking -- in an interestingly new sense. Our work has enormous potential to enhance our ability to mould, harness, and perceive wave at will. I believe it can stimulate new thoughts of realising something extraordinary that is counter-intuitive."
