Women who drink green tea may lower their risk of developing some digestive system cancers, especially cancers of the stomach/esophagus and colorectum, according to a study led by researchers from Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

The study by lead author Sarah Nechuta, Ph.D., MPH, assistant professor of Medicine, was published online in advance of the Nov. 1 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., MPH, professor of Medicine, chief of the Division of Epidemiology and director of the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, was the principal investigator for the study.

To determine green tea's impact on cancer risk, the investigators surveyed women enrolled in the Shanghai Women's Health Study, a population-based study of approximately 75,000 middle-aged and older Chinese women. During the initial interview participants were asked if they drank tea, the type of tea consumed and how much they consumed. Most of the Chinese women reported drinking primarily green tea.

The researchers found that regular tea consumption, defined as tea consumption at least three times a week for more than six months, was associated with a 17 percent reduced risk of all digestive cancers combined. A further reduction in risk was found to be associated with an increased level of tea drinking. Specifically, those who consumed about two to three cups per day (at least 150 grams of tea per month) had a 21 percent reduced risk of digestive system cancers.

The trend toward fewer digestive cancers was strongest for stomach/esophageal and colorectal cancers.

"For all digestive system cancers combined, the risk was reduced by 27 percent among women who had been drinking tea regularly for at least 20 years," said Nechuta. "For colorectal cancer, risk was reduced by 29 percent among the long-term tea drinkers. These results suggest long-term cumulative exposure may be particularly important."

Tea contains polyphenols or natural chemicals that include catechins like EGCG and ECG. Catechins have antioxidant properties and may inhibit cancer by reducing DNA damage and blocking tumor cell growth and invasion.

The researchers also asked about other lifestyle factors including the kinds of food eaten regularly, exercise habits, education level and occupation. Women who had ever smoked or who drank alcohol were excluded from the study.

Regular tea drinkers in the study were younger, had higher education, exercised more and consumed more fruits and vegetables. While the researchers adjusted for these factors, they could not rule out an effect from these and other unmeasured lifestyle habits.

The study was conducted in nonsmoking and nondrinking Chinese women to minimize the potential influence of these two risk factors on the results for tea consumption and digestive system cancer risk.

E. coli adapts to colonize plants

E. coli adapts to colonize plants

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

New research from the Institute of Food Research has given new clues as to how some E. colistrains, normally at home in mammalian gastrointestinal tracts, have adopted slightly different transmission strategies, with some being better adapted to live on plants than others.

In the light of recent outbreaks of food poisoning due to contamination of vegetables by dangerous strains of E. coli, this information will be useful to making sure our food remains safe. E. coli is most at home in the warm, moist, nutrient-rich environment found in the gastrointestinal tract of warm-blooded animals. But to disperse from one host to another these bacteria must get out into the world. There is evidence that some E. coli can survive for several weeks outside the host, and even grow in water or soil. But it is on plant matter that E. coli colonisation has become a concern, as although most types of E. coliare harmless, the presence of pathogenic strains on fruit and vegetables presents a food safety risk.

To find out more, the IFR team took the first comprehensive look at the differences between the populations of E. coli growing on crop plants and populations in the mammalian gut. Funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, they took over 100 isolates from leafy parts of vegetables growing in fields in England. Analysis of these showed that even within the same field the E. coli population is diverse and complex. They then compared these isolates with a standard reference collection of E. colitaken from mammals, including humans, from different continents. Profiling the two groups found a number of significant differences depending on the source of isolation. Compared to the habitat inside the gut, a leaf surface is a hostile environment for gut bacteria. The temperature fluctuates away from the constant 37 ?C inside our bodies, and there is a greater risk of drying out.

The researchers found that E. coli populations derived from plants tended to form biofilms more readily. Biofilms are complex structures formed by populations of bacteria coming together to make a thin film over a surface. They are held together by a protective extracellular matrix of proteins and sugars, and the researchers saw that there was also an increase in the production of components of this matrix in E. coli derived from the fields. These strains also used sucrose and other plant-derived sugars more than the E. colipopulations derived from mammalian sources.

Biofilms might help to prevent E. coli drying out outside of its host and being able to take advantage of plant sugars could also aid their survival outside the main host, although overall the plant strains showed lower growth on the usual carbon sources E. coliuses.

An analysis showed that these differences are associated with previously defined phylogentic groups of E. coli showing that different environmental conditions have a selective effect in the evolution of different groups. While some have become more generalised, adapting to life outside the mammalian gut, others have remained specialised for life in this environment, avoiding the associated growth penalty. "While it was known that different environments harboured different E. coli populations, we now have an idea on how and why this happens," said Sacha Lucchini. "Knowledge of the mechanisms involved in plant colonisation by E. coli provides targets for developing strategies aimed at preventing potentially dangerous E. coli strains from colonising vegetables, thus keeping them off our plates."

Videos Send Viewers to Facebook Pages - Web Video Marketing

From: eMarketer | Tuesday, 30 October 2012 09:34 ?? Brand sites are second-most-common destination

Spending on online video ads is growing quickly, and marketers are finding the ads good for branding, typically sending viewers who show interest to the brand?s owned media properties.

According to research from opt-in video platform Jun Group, a visit to a brand?s Facebook page was the most common action taken after watching an online video ad, at least for US viewers watching an opt-in ad from a Fortune 500 brand. Clicking through to a site followed close behind.

Overall, engagement rates with video ads hovered between just under 3% and 4.5%, with videos between 30 and 60 seconds long performing best. Videos both shorter and longer than that sweet spot had lower engagement rates, though the shortest videos had the highest completion rates.

Jun Group found women were slightly more likely to complete video ads than men, at 3.31% vs. 3.17%, while the youngest internet users and the oldest internet users had the highest completion rates overall, at 3.44% among 12- to 17-year-olds and 4.35% among those 55 and up.

Sandy helps push gasoline prices lower

Stephen Schork, The Schork Report, discusses the impact of superstorm Sandy on oil refineries. The FMHR traders discuss.

Stephen Schork, The Schork Report, discusses the impact of superstorm Sandy on oil refineries. The FMHR traders discuss.

By Patti Domm , CNBC

Gasoline prices are likely to keep falling after Super Storm Sandy shut down highways and air travel across the East Coast.

?We?re not going to see prices move higher because of this storm. We?re going to see prices move lower,? said Tom Kloza, oil analyst at OPIS. RBOB gasoline futures were down a half percent, at $2.62 per gallon in afternoon trading Tuesday.

?Gasoline at the pump continued to decline, with the national average for unleaded regular $3.53, a penny lower than Monday and 11 cents cheaper than a week ago.

?Kloza and others said gasoline could move higher in the short term but the dynamic favors lower prices.

??My guess is we?ll have 20 to 25 states that will have prices below where they were a year ago,? he said. ?It could be in the $3.40s (a gallon) by next week. There?s a huge swatch of the country that?s going to be get closer to $3.??

Five East Coast refineries producing gasoline were all in the path of Sandy. The Linden, N.J.-based Philips 66 refinery, one of the nation's largest, remained closed Tuesday after it was shut pre-emptively ahead of Monday?s storm. The plant did see some flooding, and it was awaiting a return of power in the next day or two. But several other refineries, which had been operating at reduced levels, were restoring operations.

(Read More: Trading Oil in the Wake of Sandy)

The refineries produce about 6.5 percent of the U.S. gasoline. Another refinery, owned by Hess, was also shut down in New Jersey, but it does not make gasoline. The Colonial pipeline, which transports gasoline to the East Coast, said it did not have flooding or operational issues at its Linden tank farm but it was waiting for power to be restored.

?The destructive storm came ashore in South Jersey on Monday, flooding shore communities, before turning northward to flood lower Manhattan, coastal New York and Long Island, and then into New England. The massive storm, which merged with another storm, impacted Maryland, Delaware and stretched into the Midwest.

?Traffic in the mid-Atlantic was halted during Monday?s storm and sharply reduced Tuesday, as cleanup and power crews worked to clear debris and restore electricity, knocked out by the dangerous storm system. Many schools and businesses were closed or operating with reduced staff, and trading activity in the stock market and bond market remained shut down Tuesday.

Stephen Schork, The Schork Report, talks about the status of gasoline production and Sandy's impact on prices at the pump. It looks like refineries in the system were mostly unscathed, he says.

?Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, estimates that the gasoline production losses due to Sandy would amount to about 1.5 million to 1.7 million barrels , but the demand is expected to have dropped by 2 million barrels. The cancellation of thousands of airline flights also could create a backup in jet fuel. The drop in demand in refined products also takes pressure off of crude, which has been falling.

?West Texas Intermediate was flat Tuesday, up just 12 cents at $85.67 per barrel.

??This is a demand destruction event, and if you really think about it, you have an Election Day coming up. We?re not talking about a weekend that would have seen much demand. Until you get to Thanksgiving, you have one of the softest demand seasons for gasoline,? Kloza said. ?I think WTI is probably fairly valued right now. We?re seeing a lot of weak prices that don?t trade in the futures market.?

?He said heavy Canadian crude was less than $60 a barrel recently, while Bakken crude from North Dakota was $10 a barrel cheaper than WTI. Kloza said that is cheaper because of rail snags due to the storm.

Where do You Stand on Women's Health Issues : Ideas For Women ...

The election is just around the corner and some of? the media would have you believe that women?s health issues are at the center of the agenda above national security and the economy. Women?s health issues are vitally important but they should be vitally important to you no matter who wins the election. Here are tips for keeping your health issues at the top of your agenda, after all you are in control of your body at least as of today.

1. Know your body and seek medical attention if your body is telling you something is wrong. Hints at a problem include unexplained pain, bleeding, altered mental status, and dizziness or fainting for no apparent reason. Slurred speech, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and pelvic bloating or discomfort along with a change in breast appearance all should be evaluated by your physician.

2. Exercise, eating healthy, sleeping regularly and managing your emotional health are triggers to keeping a handle on your personal health issues. These are things that you can control and should to keep yourself in the best shape and feeling energetic.

3. Know what your insurance policy covers and the amounts of deductible you pay for routine preventative care. This can be discovered by calling the phone number on the back of your insurance card or talking with your agent or benefits department at your job. Be proactive, don?t wait for someone to tell you what you need to protect your health.

4 Shop around for the best insurance coverage with the lowest monthly premium. Don?t settle for the most expensive or what someone else tells you that you need. Consider other members in your family that need coverage too so you are getting the best bang for your buck when providing medical coverage.

5. Make routine preventative visits to the eye doctor, family doctor, gynecologist, and the dentist. This is the only way you can reap the benefits of early detection and be fairly sure that your health is being maintained.

Following these tips will keep you well informed about your health status. Take the time to vote next week so that women?s health issues can stay in the forefront and so you become an active participant in what regulates women?s health issues.

Mars like Hawaii? NASA rover's first soil studies help fingerprint Martian minerals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has completed initial experiments showing the mineralogy of Martian soil is similar to weathered basaltic soils of volcanic origin in Hawaii.

The minerals were identified in the first sample of Martian soil ingested recently by the rover. Curiosity used its Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin) to obtain the results, which are filling gaps and adding confidence to earlier estimates of the mineralogical makeup of the dust and fine soil widespread on the Red Planet.

"We had many previous inferences and discussions about the mineralogy of Martian soil," said David Blake of NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., who is the principal investigator for CheMin. "Our quantitative results provide refined and in some cases new identifications of the minerals in this first X-ray diffraction analysis on Mars."

The identification of minerals in rocks and soil is crucial for the mission's goal to assess past environmental conditions. Each mineral records the conditions under which it formed. The chemical composition of a rock provides only ambiguous mineralogical information, as in the textbook example of the minerals diamond and graphite, which have the same chemical composition, but strikingly different structures and properties.

CheMin uses X-ray diffraction, the standard practice for geologists on Earth using much larger laboratory instruments. This method provides more accurate identifications of minerals than any method previously used on Mars. X-ray diffraction reads minerals' internal structure by recording how their crystals distinctively interact with X-rays. Innovations from Ames led to an X-ray diffraction instrument compact enough to fit inside the rover.

These NASA technological advances have resulted in other applications on Earth, including compact and portable X-ray diffraction equipment for oil and gas exploration, analysis of archaeological objects and screening of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, among other uses.

"Our team is elated with these first results from our instrument," said Blake. "They heighten our anticipation for future CheMin analyses in the months and miles ahead for Curiosity."

The specific sample for CheMin's first analysis was soil Curiosity scooped up at a patch of dust and sand that the team named Rocknest. The sample was processed through a sieve to exclude particles larger than 0.006 inch (150 micrometers), roughly the width of a human hair. The sample has at least two components: dust distributed globally in dust storms and fine sand originating more locally. Unlike conglomerate rocks Curiosity investigated a few weeks ago, which are several billion years old and indicative of flowing water, the soil material CheMin has analyzed is more representative of modern processes on Mars.

"Much of Mars is covered with dust, and we had an incomplete understanding of its mineralogy," said David Bish, CheMin co-investigator with Indiana University in Bloomington. "We now know it is mineralogically similar to basaltic material, with significant amounts of feldspar, pyroxene and olivine, which was not unexpected. Roughly half the soil is non-crystalline material, such as volcanic glass or products from weathering of the glass. "

Bish said, "So far, the materials Curiosity has analyzed are consistent with our initial ideas of the deposits in Gale Crater recording a transition through time from a wet to dry environment. The ancient rocks, such as the conglomerates, suggest flowing water, while the minerals in the younger soil are consistent with limited interaction with water."

During the two-year prime mission of the Mars Science Laboratory Project, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to investigate whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, and built Curiosity and CheMin.

Deciding On A Tubing In Water Selecting A Boat Tube Or Other ...

Having fun on the water doesnt just have to include swimming or boating. You can find options for tubing in water that offer hours of enjoyment and even relaxation depending on the water. Tubes for this activity are available in a range of sizes and styles to fit your needs.
Riding a tube behind a boat can be exhilarating and fun for anyone. It is an alternative to skiing which requires tremendous strength and balance. When you are tubing instead, you can simply hang on and enjoy the ride.
The strength required for this activity will depend on the tube as well as the speed of the boat and the roughness of the water. Some tubes are intended to carry a number of passengers at the same time and come equipped with handles that the riders hold on to. There are many different types available.
Deciding which choice you might make can often depend on the need you have as well as the cost. These tubes are specially made to stand up to the rough treatment that they must endure on the water behind a boat. Obviously you want a material that is going to resist damage when as the water rushes past.
The cost of these items is usually dependent on the size and style. Some are very large and intended for floating down a river. Some that are intended to be hauled behind a boat are also very large but are intended for slower speeds at the same time.
As you consider the different options for this activity, of course you need to look at the cost. But you also want to take the time to look at the safety ratings and things like that. You want to look for items that have been proven safe but fun at the same time.
Tubing in water is a great way to enjoy your time on the lake with friends and family. There are a number of options that allow a person to enjoy this type of activity. Floating down the river on a tube for example is a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
Buying a boat tube or other towables can help those who do not ski enjoy that same exhilaration as those who do ski. Enjoying the feeling of flying along across the surface of the water can be great fun for anyone at any age. The speed of the boat is a factor in this activity, so make sure you are selecting a tube that is intended for the speed you have planned.

(AP) ? LeBron James got cramps, Ray Allen was snubbed and Dwyane Wade was steaming.

None of that spoiled the Miami Heat mood on ring night.

Wade scored 29 points, James finished 26 points and 10 rebounds while missing much of the second half because of cramps in both legs, and the reigning NBA champion Heat beat the Boston Celtics 120-107 on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

There were actual fireworks before the game to close the ceremony where the Heat got their championship rings and raised their title banner. There also were plenty of figurative fireworks late, first with Boston almost digging out of a 19-point hole and, after the outcome was decided, Rajon Rondo flagrantly fouling Wade by wrapping his arms around his neck on a drive.

In the end, though, the first Celtics-Heat matchup of this season was like the final one of last season ? with Miami winning.

"It was good to cap this night off with a win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was an emotional time for all of us in our organization."

Even for the newcomers, like Allen. He scored 19 points ? needing only seven field goal attempts ? in his first game with Miami since leaving Boston over the summer. Chris Bosh had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Allen got chants from the Heat crowd, which is nothing new. Except this time, they were positive.

"Never thought I'd hear that here," Allen said.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points, Rondo finished with 20 points and 13 assists, and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Boston. The Celtics, who lost to the Heat in last season's Eastern Conference finals, were not on the court for the ring ceremony.

They almost wrecked the festive mood with a late comeback.

An 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter got Boston within 111-107 on Courtney Lee's layup with 2:09 left. That was the last Celtics' hurrah ? Bosh scored the game's next seven points, sealing it for Miami.

"I thought they were the aggressor the whole game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "They got on the floor where they wanted to get on the floor. They took us out of stuff that they wanted to."

Rashard Lewis scored 10 points for Miami, which held on even while James, last season's MVP of both the regular season and NBA Finals, was in the locker room for the second time because of the cramps, first in his right leg and then his left.

"It's not an all-the-time thing," James said. "I'm not too worried about it."

The Heat got their championship rings from owner Micky Arison before the game, then watched the banner get hoisted to the rafters. More emotion came late, when Wade drove past Rondo ? and the Celtics guard grabbed Wade around the neck. Wade appeared as though he was ready to throw the ball at Rondo in retaliation, and stopped himself.

"I thought he hooked me," Rondo said.

Wade had a different opinion.

"It was a punk play by him," Wade said. "The league will take care of it. He clotheslined me, with two hands."

So Rondo raised eyebrows by putting hands on Wade. Kevin Garnett made news by not offering his hand to Allen.

As Allen entered the game for the first time, he trotted toward the Boston bench, exchanging a handshake, embrace and a few words with Rivers, who hasn't hidden his displeasure about his former shooting guard's decision to sign with Miami and didn't sound certain before the game how he would react when he saw Allen in Miami colors. Allen then briskly shook hands with a few assistant coaches.

But when Allen tried to engage Garnett, the mutual pleasantries ended. Allen tapped Garnett on the shoulder as he sat on the Boston bench; Garnett didn't even flinch, staring straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge the gesture in any way.

"I was just trying to focus as much as I could. I am such an intense person," Garnett said. "It was a blank. Obviously he's on the other side. It's time to play the game, man."

Allen didn't seem flustered. His first shot in a Miami uniform was ? what else? ? a corner 3-pointer, which swished.

"He was by himself in the corner," Rivers said. "You'd think we'd know better."

Miami controlled much of the first half, taking a 62-54 lead after James went by Pierce and Garnett for a two-handed dunk and yell for the crowd.

The first Heat angst of the season came in the third quarter, when James walked slowly to the bench after a timeout with 4:40 remaining, favoring his right leg and then headed out the tunnel toward the locker room.

When he left, the Miami lead was 79-70.

When he returned to open the fourth quarter, the lead was 93-76. The Heat scored the final eight points of the third, with Bosh, Allen, Mario Chalmers and Lewis all scoring in the final 2:17 to give the Heat their biggest lead of the game.

James ? who was dealing with a cramping issue, like he experienced at times in last season's NBA Finals ? opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to extend the run to 10-0, and Miami seemed well on its way. But he returned to the locker room a short time later, the cramps having flared up again.

"Once you start cramping, there's nothing you can do about it," James said.

Jeff Green, who had season-ending surgery for an aortic aneurysm last January, played in a game that counts for the first time since May 11, 2011 ? also in Miami, when the Heat ousted the Celtics from that season's playoffs. Green finished with three points in 23 minutes.

NOTES: Wade passed the 15,000-point mark for his career early in the second quarter, becoming the 123rd player in NBA history to reach that mark, according to STATS LLC. ... Rondo had at least 10 assists for the 25th straight regular-season game. ... The Celtics allowed 62 points in the first half; they gave up 62 or more only seven times in 379 regular-season and playoff games over the past four seasons. ... Miami players wore sneakers with gold somewhere in the color scheme; James' were primarily gold ? in honor of the ring ? and trimmed in white and red.

At polluted Santa Susana lab site, sacred cave attracts tribe's bid

The Chumash tribe has expressed interest in buying a 450-acre slice of a contaminated nuclear research facility in the hills between the Simi and San Fernando valleys, hoping to preserve a cave that its members consider sacred.

The tribe's inquiries about acquiring part of the 2,849-acre Santa Susana Field Laboratory have stirred concern among some residents who fear the purchase might be a back door to building a casino.

"I very much respect their desire to protect sacred sites but I want to make sure any such action precludes the establishment of a casino," Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks said.

Sam Cohen, government affairs and legal officer for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash, said there is no possibility of a casino on the property. The tribe wants to protect a swath of land that includes the Burro Flats Painted Cave, which is decorated with some of the best preserved Native American pictographs in California.

"If the tribe owns the land, we'll be in the best position to protect sacred sites," Cohen said.

Parks questioned whether the Chumash, a sovereign nation like other federally recognized tribes, would be bound by the elaborate cleanup agreement orders that apply to the portion of the sprawling facility that they are seeking.

Most of the lab site is owned by Boeing, which purchased it when the company acquired Rocketdyne in 1996. Boeing has not signed on to a 2010 cleanup plan with state regulators, but under the plan, NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy have promised to remove tainted soil and pollutants from the areas they control by 2017.

The Painted Cave is on NASA land.

Listed in 1976 on the National Register of Historic Places, Burro Flats has long been recognized for its archaeological significance. Perhaps as long as 1,000 years ago, Native American groups used the cave for rituals. Its walls are lined with paintings, including stick-figure animals and cornstalk-like plants. On the first day of winter, a shaft of light illuminates a design resembling a target; some researchers believe it was used in a ceremony marking the winter solstice.

Established in 1947, the secretive lab tested liquid propellants for rocket engines. In 1957, one of America's first commercial nuclear power plants was built at the site, generating electricity for nearby Moorpark. In 1959, that plant was also the site of America's first partial nuclear meltdown ? an accident revealed only decades later. Over the years, the lab generated toxic and radioactive wastes that neighbors blamed for cancer and other illnesses.

Even amid testing of about 30,000 rocket engines, the area around the cave was not damaged. Tight security kept visitors away. Over the years, NASA has admitted closely escorted groups of Native Americans "for ceremonial purposes," but such treks have become increasingly rare, said Merrilee Fellows, a NASA spokeswoman.

Although decades of security have helped preserve the cave's painted images, Cohen said, the tribe fears the effects of possible cleanup measures, including one he described as "scraping the site clean."

Officials say such fears are unfounded.

"We've heard hyperbole being kicked around about scraping the top off the mountain and it's not remotely accurate," said Rick Brausch, who is directing the cleanup for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.

Scientists are still gauging the scope of contamination on the NASA-controlled property, he said. Some of the cleanup will involve carting off truckloads of soil. Other methods have not yet been determined.

"We don't even think there's contamination in that particular area" of the cave, Brausch said. "If there were, we'd design a strategy that wouldn't destroy the resource."

Regardless of whether the land changes hands, the cleanup will proceed, officials said.

The federal General Services Administration has deemed the NASA portion of the lab "excess" property, indicating its willingness to sell. Last month, the Bureau of Indian Affairs told the agency that the tribe was interested in mounting a bid. No price has been disclosed.

Cohen said the tribe might collaborate with other Native American groups to build a cultural center.

He said the tribe would not seek to make the land part of its reservation ? a legal requirement for tribal gambling operations. The Chumash have met stiff opposition in their attempt to annex 1,400 acres just down the road from their tiny Santa Ynez reservation. Neighbors fear the tribe will erect a casino on the property, a scenario the tribe denies.

Google Inc (GOOG) Faces New Competitor as Publishers Join ...

Google Inc. (GOOG)Pearson Plc (NYSE:PSO) and Bertelsmann A.G. agreed today that the two would combine their book-publshing operations, Random House and Penguin respectively, in a joint venture, to be called Penguin Random House.

"The combination of Penguin and Random House would create a book-publishing powerhouse responsible for roughly a quarter of global English-language consumer book sales,"?writes the Wall Street Journal. "The joint venture... will create a publishing giant that will have more heft at a time when the book business is being rocked by the rise of online retailers and e-books," like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple, and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG).

"Together, the two publishers will be able to share a large part of their costs, to invest more for their author and reader constituencies and to be more adventurous in trying new models in this exciting, fast-moving world of digital books and digital readers," said Marjorie Scardino, Pearson's chief executive.?In other words, the cost-savings will enable the publishers to compete more effectively, but there is more to it than that.

Earlier this month, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) reached a settlement with several book publishers, Pearson included, "allow publishers to choose whether Google digitizes their books and journals," writes the New York Times. "The deal allows publishers to choose whether to allow Google to digitize their out-of-print books that are still under copyright protection. If Google does so, it will also provide them with a digital copy for their own use, perhaps to sell on their Web sites."

The litigation began several years ago when e-books were still in their infancy, and long before Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)?Kindles and Apple iPads, and it doesn't solve some of the issues Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has faced with authors. But, as explained by the New York Times, "under the settlement, publishers get the benefit of Google digitizing out-of-print books that they might not otherwise have turned into e-books. Meanwhile, Google can expand the library of e-books it sells to consumers."

?What?s really exciting about today?s settlement is the fact that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) will be getting access to books that have long been out of print, that are in copyright,? said Tom Turvey, director of strategic partnerships at?Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG). ?It?s good for users who weren?t able to buy them before, and for publishers.?

What will the Afghanistan war legacy be?

Much of the Soviets'?development work got wiped out by a civil war in the 1990s. But the scope of the effort then was limited compared with the work today.

Kabul, Afghanistan, is more prosperous 10 years after the US invaded, but it still needs a lot of help with improving basic infrastructure - such as overcrowded roads.

There may be two years left on the clock for the war in Afghanistan, but NATO's ability to shape events has largely come to an end, with the fighting at a stalemate, stalled peace negotiations, and incidents of Afghan security forces turning against their international counterparts.

Officials say international war and aid efforts are ongoing, but there are few indications that they will yield different results.

Rather than asking what more the international community can do in Afghanistan, the question may now be, What kind of legacy will the past decade of international influence leave here, and how long can it last?

Since invading Afghanistan in October 2001, the United States has appropriated nearly $100 billion for reconstruction and development there. Despite problems with fraud, corruption, and mismanagement, Afghanistan is a different nation than it was 11 years ago. The investment has created a 352,000-strong Afghan security force and increased access to electricity from 6 percent to 18 percent of the population; 3.2 million girls are now in school, up from fewer than 5,000 during the Taliban regime.

Yet throughout the country there are numerous indicators that many Afghans have little faith in the future. An estimated $8 billion in cash was taken out of the country last year, and property dealers say Afghans have all but stopped buying land, the stalwart investment in this largely agrarian society.

The Soviet example?

To better understand the road ahead, a look back at the Soviet experience here may prove instructive.

"[The Soviets] were pretty active, and to a large degree effective, in urban-based development schemes, the paving of roads, the construction of buildings for government, and things of that nature," says Thomas Gouttierre, director of the Center for Afghanistan Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Mr. Gouttierre first began working in Afghanistan in 1964. Unable to visit during the nine-year Russian war, he says he remembers returning shortly after it was over to find that many of the large cities such as Kabul, Jalalabad, and Herat had been noticeably changed by Soviet development projects. The power grid had improved, new roads were paved, and housing developments had been expanded.

Meanwhile, there were other changes not readily apparent. Russians had sent Afghans to study in the USSR and even launched an Afghan pilot into space.

Halloween Safety Tips: | Celeb Baby Laundry

Halloween can be a fun and exciting holiday for kids. Unfortunately, it can also be a very dangerous holiday. Trick-or-treating although fun, is a pedophiles dream. It?s dark and there are tons unsupervised ?silly? children running around. Please ensure you discuss with your kids some very simple safety tips so they will return to you safely!

#5- Make sure to follow your city?s rules about times. It keeps kids safe and it?s respectful to neighbors! By letting kids go before or after the allotted times is a great time for predators to be out and about. There will naturally be less kids out at those times and there will likely be less adults around too, makes grabbing a kid much easier. It also ensures that your children are respectful to your neighborhoods. Halloween is likely the #1 day for vandalism and unfortunately it?s done by kids aged 13-18. It?s unfortunate that people have to guard their houses this night to ensure that their possessions stay in one piece.

#4- Only visit neighborhoods you are familiar with. To ensure your kids don?t get lost and confused make sure you and them are familiar with their areas. Making sure you are aware of your areas will also help you keep an eye out for when things are out of place and faces that don?t look right. Make sure you set boundaries for your children: to include where they can go and what times they need to be home or checking in with you.

#3- Avoid costumes that could be mistaken as threatening. With all the violence with young kids and guns coming to attention many cities are being strict about kids with weapons. Don?t let your children fall victim of troublesome acts by letting them have violent costumes. Superhero?s and ?bad guys? are always a popular topic for costumes but ensure that your children to mask their fake weapons to look like real ones. Also check with your schools if it?s allowed to wear costumes that your children can bring their ?weapons?. Many schools and indoor type trick-or-treating events are banning masks and weapons to ensure everyone stays safe!

#2- Equip kids with a flash light for when the sun starts to set. Let them take a cell phone in case there is an emergency. Make sure you talk to your children about what is a dangerous or potentially dangerous situation. If your kids go with a group of their friends explain to them how important it is to make sure everyone in their group stays with them. It?s very hard as kids come into teenage years to stick up for their peers when perhaps someone is left behind because they are being slow or whatever a reason may be but that is a perfect way for children to get picked up by a stranger. Please encourage your children to make sure their peers are always okay and around them.

#1- ?As always, make sure that you inspect your children?s loot they bring home. You never know what you?ll find. If you are in any way doubting if something is safe to eat, toss it out! If your children didn?t collect enough candy and your tossing out the stuff they did, visit your local retailer a few days after Halloween and you?ll get allll the candy your heart can desire for a fraction of the cost! It?s often laughed at about checking candy, but do you really want to find out the hard way that YOUR piece just happened to be laced with something? Yeah, I don?t either!

Enjoy your safe holiday!

How To Be Successful At Internet Marketing | Dan Wangert

Published in Make Money online on 29th October 2012

For those who are ambitious and energetic, network marketing dwells among the most breathtaking business categories. Here are a few smart, effective ways to handle your network marketing business so that you succeed.

You may want to offer your customer incentives to increase immediate sales. Special rewards for your customers could include anything from holiday gift wrapping, expedited shipping, or a free item included after a certain price point. Why not offer free shipping to the first 50 customers who place an order for your product? This is the perfect way to get potential customers to act today, rather than putting it off until tomorrow.

Consider using short term promotions as a means to improve your PageRank. You can buy a page ranking if you have a good enough deal. The concept is similar to businesses selling an item at a loss, expecting to profit from the move in the future.

Don?t be typical when it comes to banner ads. So give your banner ad a more appealing look to entice more people to click it.

Internet marketing serves the ultimate purpose of problem recognition and solution. Try to anticipate what questions you can provide answers to or problems you can solve. Customers will tell others if they received excellent service from you, and word of mouth advertising is the best kind.

Create product and service packages that you can sell at a wholesale discount, and propose distribution agreements with other retailers on the web. Doing so can increase the number of markets you connect with and lead to more sales. An example of this would be using an online book agent. They help to negotiate prices for people to make sure they get the best rates on things like airfare, hotels and car rentals. This technique works very well for companies who offer complementary products without being rivals.

To turn your visitors into customers, give them an easy content page that will show them how good the product is, and what it will do for them ? a simple video works great. Customers like to feel that they are making an informed decision before purchasing your product. This tells them that you are just supplying information; the choice of whether to buy or not is entirely up to them.

Take these tips, and put them to use in your business. These ideas can form a rock solid grounding for your success in network marketing.

Five Training Mistakes to Avoid | Pets Best Insurance Blog

Top tips from a pet insurance company for training your dog.The National Humane Society cites behavioral issues as the number one reason that dogs and cats are relinquished every year. Undoubtedly, a well-behaved dog will be a more accepted and productive member of the family. It?s best to start training pets as young as possible, but you CAN teach old dogs new tricks! Here are five common training mistakes to avoid.

1. Inconsistency
Nothing is more confusing to a pet than inconsistency. Why is being on the couch okay with dad, but not okay with mom? Everyone in the family needs to be on board with the rules to help enforce them. Start by having a family meeting when a new pet is introduced to the family, or when a new training regimen is started. Lay down the ground rules and ensure everyone is willing to enforce them.

2. Always rewarding with a treat
This seems counter-intuitive, but over-praising can actually have the opposite effect. Consider this human example: when we?re ?rewarded? for a behavior every time, like the light turning on when we flip a light switch, we don?t keep trying to flip the switch when that reward doesn?t happen ? i.e. the light bulb is burned out. Dogs who always get treats will stop doing the behavior you are asking for if the treat doesn?t present itself right away.

Additionally, using another human example, when we?re ?rewarded? intermittently for behaviors, such as occasionally winning the lottery after buying a ticket, we?ll keep doing it again and again! The same is true for dogs. Reward with treats occasionally and your pet will hold out that this may be that one time when something tasty is fed and continue to perform the command you are asking!

3. Giving a command more than once
This is a very common mistake owners make with new puppies. The puppy doesn?t respond to the command the first time, so we repeat it. The problem is that the command ?sit,? has now become ?sit-sit- can you sit?-sit down-siiiit-sit-sit,? and the pet thinks that he or she doesn?t have to sit until you?ve said it thirty times. To avoid this problem, say the command once, then help your pet perform the command correctly, then praise!

4. Unreasonable expectations
-Age. Remember that your puppy is just a puppy! Like a child, learning will take repetition and time.
-Breed. It is probably unreasonable to expect a Pug to be able to herd goats. Some breeds are more capable of complex tasks due to their increased intelligence. There can be variation among the same breed as well, some pets are just smarter than others!
-Memory capacity. This is an important mistake to avoid. It?s estimated that dogs have a short term memory span of less than a minute. Therefore, if you scold your pet for a mistake she made more than a minute ago, she is unlikely to understand why you are mad. You have to catch your dog in the act of a naughty behavior to appropriately discipline. So next time you are steaming mad about that new pair of shoes that were chewed while you were away, take a deep breath. Yelling now will make no sense to her!

5. Overdoing it
Especially in the beginning, training should be kept fun and short. Shorter, more frequent sessions will help prevent burnout and fatigue (for both of you!) In addition, learning too many commands at the same time can be confusing to a dog.

Getting a new four-legged family member, whether young or adult, is an exciting time. Always consider having your new friend examined to ensure she is healthy and up to date on vaccines, get started on training right away, and of course, always consider pet health insurance, so you can provide the absolute best veterinary care.
